I don't know where you live Seagull. But your attorney was right.
The hospital/Doctors office billing dept will tell you they are going to do any number of things. Their job is to get you to pay the bill, by whatever means, including telling you they will send you to collections. As long as you are paying something on the bill, they are not allowed. It is called good faith effort.
You are paying the bill, just not as fast as they want you to.
Typically they will threaten but so long as you pay something.
The thought is that most people are so upset about being turned in to collections and having their credit screwed up, that they cave in.
Fight fire with fire. Tell them that is all you can afford, if they want to send you to collections, you will sue them. They tried to send me to collections for 23 bucks once, and I worked for the SOB's.
A friend of my Mom's was made to sign a promissary note for the difference her insurance wouldn't cover. I told her to send them a dollar a month. She sent them 5 bucks a month, and when they threatened her she told them she was on a fixed income and couldn't afford it, it's gonna take a long time to pay the bill, but hey there is no interest on it...lol
