I recall when Hank Aaron was chasing Babe Ruth's record for the all time home run leader. The sports world was captivated as was the nation. It was an event for the ages. Did Barry Bond's home run last night have the same effect? Not even close.

I didn't even know it was at risk. I had to go look up wtf this thread was about.
It goes to show, how much "place" baseball has lost in our lives.
A couple of strikes, a couple of drug arrests, a couple of steroid scandals. It's no longer a national pastime, it is an annual freak show.
But then, I stopped watching baseball when Cal Ripken Jr. Retired.

let me first point out that I am not a Barry Bonds fan.I was a fan of his late father Bobby Bonds.
Barry Bonds just hit his 756th home run of his career. One more than Hank Aaron and 42 more than Babe Ruth. Ruth being the most prolific name to ever be associated with the game.
Babe Ruth was famous for over indulging in hot dogs, beer and laughter. A litle boy in a big man's body. A GREAT MAN!
bARRY bONDS HAS NOW HIT MORE HOME RUNS THAN ANY EVER DID BEFORE.tHERE ARE MANY DIFFERENCES in the environment that these two men played in.
Different ball parks, different balls, different pitchers and different heights of pitching mounds just to mention a few.
If Babe Ruth played in Barry's time or Barry played in the Babe's,we would have probably had a very exciting home run race every year.
None the less Barry Bonds has now hit more home runs than anyone else who ever played the game.
GIVE HIM THE CREDIT OF WHICH HE HAS EARNED. Do not allow the demons and sins of the person to out weigh the accomplishments of the hitter.
In other words,HATE THE MEDIA not Barry.
Sure wish I had been the one to carry that ball away last night. I think I would have offered to Bonds for 1/2 of what he might ever sell it for. He earned it! He should have the opportunity to have the ball.
ok! all in me very humble opinion. have fun!

This record isn't tainted. Just curious, In the future, when we have bionic superplayers, with hydraulic legs and motorized arms, will they be allowed to break records and get invited to Cooperstown and the such too??? ghowie

All I can say is that if Hank Aaron used steroids, the home run record would of been at 942 home runs.

I'm with you shoeless, while you may not like Barry, he has done something no one else has.
In addition, the man has to have some skills/talent, steroids alone would not allow him to hit that many homeruns.
Finally, no one has produced concrete proof that Barry used steroids. "Leaked" grand jury testimony is not proof, and could have been intentional.
I thought people were innocent until proven guilty?
Congratulations to Barry, and remember A. Rod is hot on his heels, and considerably younger than Barry too!

I'm sorry Shoe, Odyssey, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one.
Yes, he did something no other human has. But, if that performance was in fact tainted by performance enhancing drugs, then he accomplished something he wouldn't have been able to in his normal career, un-enhanced. As a result, he artificially shortened the time in which Hank Aaron stood as home run king. Probably by more than a generation.
Was he convicted or exhonerated of substance enhancement? Yes in this country, you are supposed to be "innocent until proven guilty." But the reality of that is, even if you're declared "innocent" you may be guilty.
Bonds' own performance stats and career history make the supposition of steroid use very likely to be true.
The speedy bulking up over a short period of time, the vastly increased resulting performance and the fast tapering off of said performance. These are not the physical traits of a man who is steroid free.
In reality left to nature, the human form would have peaked later and the peak would have lasted longer as in the case of the great Hank Aaron or the legendary Cal Ripken Jr. Neither of which so far as I know were ever even suspected of using performance enhancing drugs. Nor should they be.
As an ethics question, this record is tainted to the trained eye. And nothing can change that, any more than nothing can change the fact that the raw numbers tell what happened.
Might as well go steal an election and then declare it a mandate!

Well said Brig. Dale Murphy, a 2 time NL MVP back in the 80's had this to say, to which I completely agree: "It's never been legal to abuse a controlled substance . . . A lot of guys decided not to do it, even though they weren't testing. I decided not to do it. I thought it was wrong. It was illegal. I said, 'I'm not going to do that.' [Bonds] has a trainer sitting in prison because he won't testify against Bonds. "He hasn't denied it. He said he took it, but didn't know what it was. We found out later it was steroids. "You just have to teach your kids to make judgments in life. You're not always going to have all the facts, but you've got to make judgments. I understand in this country you're innocent until proven guilty, but this isn't a law case, this is how you feel." For entire interview with Dale, go here: www.sltrib.com/sports/ci_6570668
