The rules and regulation governing the Italian Foreign Exchange Office (Ufficio Italiano dei Cambi, hereafter referred as the UIC) are stipulated under Legislative Decree no. 319 of 26 August 1998, which was issued, following reception of the opinion of the European Central Bank (ECB), as part of the regulatory initiatives contemplated under Law no. 433 of 17 December 1997 to ensure the compatibility of national systems of laws and regulations with the provisions of article 109 (formerly 108) of the Treaty Establishing the European Community.
