lol..funny thing happened tonight.. I get home from work..and my girlfriend is all freaked out.. it turns out that the neighbor's cat (its a long story..but the neighbor's cat eats at our place from time to time..lol)...anyways.. this cat..found its way under my recliner chair..and she wouldn't come out.. I got a flashlight out..and wouldn't you know.. it had kittens..lol this is my question.. what should we put out for nourishment for the cat and kittens-- should we just feed the cat and let the mother nurse the kittens?.. or do we need to put something out for the kittens as well (food or water?).. I know somebody here will be able to give me the right answer thanks dd p.s. I will be telling our neighbor tomorrow about the kittens.. thats a whole other story

Careful with the dog , mama cat WILL defend her kittens . And know this , if she liked her home with the neighbors ...... she would have had them there , you can't OWN a cat , they pick there homes , if their not happy they leave . You gave her a welcome when you fed her , now she thinks it's ok . Problem is , those babies , need their mom for six weeks minimum then you can find good homes for them . Try to keep them safe please . R

DD,
Congratulations on YOUR new kittens. Let the mother be and don't try and touch the kitties. Mom will move them if you give them to much attention, and who knows where she'll hide them. Ours moved her litter 3 different times. I was the only one who could look or even touch them. Every time my husband got near her, they were moved into more remote places.
We actually had two mothers with two litters, at the same time. We ended up keeping three of the kittens -- my husband is a softy.
Cats and dogs can live together just fine. We have a 100# white Shepard and a 60 lab; the cats are only 10# and let me tell you the cats run the place.

I'm sure it will be okay. Thanks again for the advice

Put them in a box and take them to the neighbors, the mama cat will follow. You can move them to a better suited place. My cat always liked to have them under my bed. I've moved kittens to a box with an old blanket or towel and put them on the screened in porch, underneath a table or behind something. The mother was fine with it as long as the kittens were somewhat hidden. Why they eat the placenta. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlacentophagyThe placenta contains high levels of prostaglandin which stimulates involution of the uterus, in effect cleaning the uterus out. The placenta also contains small amounts of oxytocin which eases birth stress and causes the smooth muscles around the mammary cells to contract and eject milk. The most general benefit of placentophagy, according to recent research, is that placenta and amniotic fluid contain a molecule (POEF, Placental Opioid-Enhancing Factor) that modifies the activity of endogenous opioids in such a way that produces an enhancement of the natural reduction in pain that occurs shortly before and during delivery. There, feel smarter.

What ever you do, don't, and I repeat, don't, take f4d's advice in this particular situation. Right, gang?
j/k
Never feed kittens pasturized cow's milk. It can cause deformities or disabilities that kittens can not always overcome.
Once they are about 4 weeks old, they could be supplemented with a product called KMR made especially for felines, but the mother will be taking care of them just fine.
I used to do volunteer work for the Humane Society and am a sucker for animals. Even strangers seem to know. They have been known to dump their pets off right in front of my house. Santasi has the best answer.

DD...you need to name those kittens. You could go the guru route and name them Jay, Acca, ELO etc. You go go the Belgian route...or you could name them after those associated with company: Urban, Melvin, Frizzell. pr

Once again I came to this party late. Sorry DD. I've worked in the veterinary field for over 16yrs. Your problem is quite simple. As many in this thread have already advised, just feed mom, and leave the kittens alone. KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement) should only be used if the mom stops caring for the kitttens. If that happens, you can use the KMR as early as necessary. It is probably the best thing to use when the mom goes awol. Generally the kittens should stay with mom until 6-8 weeks old. Their eyes will open around 2 weeks of age. Eventually the kits will wander away from mom to play and explore. At this time you can start to mess with them. That's when the real fun begins... Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions. <Flailing tail>

... or a spoon full of tuna a couple of times a day ... Nooooo....tuna is bad. High ash content. It can cause urinary tract problems. Cats usually love it, but its bad for them. I love twinkies, but they are bad for me... Some cats won't drink milk... and they like it better if it is room temp.. but don't put it in the microwave because it kills the nutrients ... As pointed out, cow's milk is not good for cats. The likely result is diarrhea... And no matter what you do with the advise on this thread, DON'T listen to D_O <Flailing tail>

Great idea, StarFire! Our first photos of official CMKX kittens.... Diamondogg11, in about four weeks, they'll be so cute you'll have to keep 'em all! Say, maybe by then you can start taking bids for them, and donate the proceeds to the National Humane Society. I can see the headlines now... Multi-millions Paid for abandoned Kittens...
