Okay . . . I have been getting some PM's on how to post an avatar, and although yours will probably never be as well thought out and as interesting as mine, I will post how to do so in a few minutes . . . Give me a second. golden ;D

Below are the instructions on how to have a picture "hosted" so that you can post it in your thread, or put it in your avatar. The first set of instructions (in black type) are for getting your picture "hosted". The instructions that follow (in blue) have to do with putting the pic into your avatar. You need to read the first set of instructions, before you can do the second. It is a bit of a pain in the a$$, but once you know it, it can be a ton of fun. Start here . . . How to insert a picture into your post First of all, you have to have the picture in a file. Unfortunately, you can not just copy and paste a picture. One way to get it into one is to use the "mspaint.exe" program (which you can start up by using the Windows Start...run command and just entering "mspaint" into the "Open" field), "pasting" your clipboard contents into the mspaint app, and then saving the result into a file. Use "JPG" format for best performance (it usually creates smaller files than, say, GIF or BMP format). Once you have the file saved somewhere on your hard disk, you'll need to get the picture hosted on a public web server. If you happen to have your own web server, you probably wouldn't have needed these instructions... so you'll need a public image-hosting web site. The one that I use is photobucket.com/Some folks like these sites: www.villagephotos.com/www.imageshack.us/The site named "Tinypic" no longer seems to work with ProBoards; the images just come up blank on ProBoards v4. Once there (the following instructions are for photobucket.com, but other hosting sites work pretty much the same way--except that they may not require you to set up an account first): first register for an account. Once you have your user name and password, log in (I suggest you have it "remember" your id and password so you don't have to log in each time), and then just click the "Browse" button and select the file you just saved from mspaint (or any other image on your system). It'll come back with several fields containing short URL's (web addresses) for that picture. The "plain" URL (no tags in square brackets around it, the top one if you're using Photobucket) is the one to use for avatars only. For putting into your signature or a post, use the one with the "img" tags around it (in square brackets.) Copy the URL and/or tags you need into your clipboard at some point for convenience. Now, back at the board here, when you're composing your message and are ready to insert the picture, press the "Insert Image" button up top (2nd row, 4th from left button in the button array) and replace the text that says "URL" with the address you got from photobucket (with the img tags...or, if this if for an avatar, no tags.) It is a pain, but you'll get used to the procedure...after the 100th time or so Using a custom avatar for your login is very straightforward. It is basically a 2-step process: Posting your avatar
1. Post the avatar image (typically a .GIF or .JPG file) on a web site, such as photobucket.com (instructions for doing so are above)
[as of this writing, images uploaded to tinypic aren't showing up on ProBoards v4, so don't use tinypic.]
When you're done posting the picture, you'll have a URL (web address) for that picture to use in step 2.
2. Now go into your Profile by clicking the profile button located at the top of the page (a little to the left, just under where you click to access your PM's), and enter the URL for the avatar picture you've posted into the "I have my own pic" field. Do NOT use any tags, like img, around the URL for the avatar image (you'd only need those for images you put in your signature or into a post). Always use the URL . . . If you are computer illiterate, like me, just remember that and you will be fine.
You can experiment with different height and width settings; the picture will be scaled automatically to fit into the specified number of pixels. 100 x 100 is a nice size to try (the largest it takes). If the picture is naturally longer in one dimension or the other, try to use dimensions that reflect the correct scale ("aspect ratio"). You can keep trying until it looks "right".
That's it! Any time you update your avatar, the change will instantly reflect in all of your posts, not just ones you make in the future. So you're actually changing all your past posts as well.

My avatar may not be the best, but it is something that hits home for me. Not taking anything away from the original Marines picture, I knew a good number of Firefighters who lost there lives at the World Trade Center. It was most difficult listening to the transmissions of audio from that dreadful day. They went to do their job and many never came home to their families. God bless them. FIRE
