was hoping someone could tell me what to look for when I choose a pup for my daughter out of a litter of 6 pups. They are full bred, HUSKY with no papers, and I would just like a few pointers on what to look for as far as health and "quality" It is for my daughter 7 yr old, and dont want to choose a sick or bad pup. It wold be a shame to give it to her and it not be healthy. Thanx all.

Chaos,
We had a purebred husky for 3-4 years after we were first married. They are beautiful, but they need ALOT of space. She ran away at least once a month, climbed our 6' chain link fence, and lived with another family for 5 months once before she came back.
We live in Texas and in town. If you are in the country and further north, you may be allright.
They are absolutely beautiful dogs.

The best way to pick a pup is to watch them for a while. They will act at home the way they act with the litter.
Your daughter will love it.

Choose temperament and personality first over good looks. Pups at 7 or 8 weeks are already pretty much " who they are" so, my advice is to pick one that is calm and easy going. (As calm as puppies can be.) You don't want one that is too assertive because in my experience it will grow to be a pushy dog. And you don't want one that frightened and sitting off by itself.
Sit on the floor and call them. See which ones come to you first. You want your pup to be interested in people. Pick them up. Avoid the ones that panic and struggle and whine. Pick one that is calm and comfortable in your arms. Children can be real rough on puppies and dogs... Temperment is extremely important .

let a pup pick her, the pup will come up to her and sit by her..should anyway...thats what murphy did with me, except he peed on my shoe, and sat down next to me..
LOL, he was 4 weeks old then, i got him 2 weeks later..
murphy is a golden retriever.

Here's my little buddy, a cocker spaniel named Monte. He ran up to me and stood there wagging his tail. I knew he was coming home with us.

thanx all for responding, we have the pup now, and looks great, thanx squirrel for the tips, I respect someones opinion that works in the field. We have arranged to get a pup here in a bit, and have the agreement if the vet says is not good we get the deposit back that we left. he is a bundle, and believe my daughter will be very surprised with it. It is black and white with blue eyes, VERY beautiful!
This guy is for a family pet and I have no interest in breeding as squirrel said, so for the price I think he will do. Besides ACCA says B4 Christmas right, so nothing else matters right? LOL thanx again all, I will post pics asap. thanx again for the tips, you all are appreciated!!

Yes to what the others have posted, also check for clear eyes, cold wet nose, good coat. If the puppy's parent's are on sight, watch them, you can see their temperment. Watch how they act and react to people and noise. Also how the puppy reacts to sharp noises clap hands or droping something. You might want to have an agreement with the puppy's owner in writing, that you can take the puppy to a vet within 72 hours, and if the vet finds something wrong, you can bring it back, for a refund or another puppy. We had this and you really need to take the puppy to a vet right away, in any case don't wait! Try to find a Husky web sight on the internet. Maybe the AKC or one of the other kennel clubs have something. Or just type in husky and google or yahoo....
Two years ago I held up a Rat Terrier puppy to my cheek and he kissed me.....(none of the puppies had).....'nuff said...done deal right then and there....now this little fella was 3 weeks old, at the time. I had to wait another 5 weeks before I could bring him home! What a long wait! THEN, all that first year, (what a long year it was) I tried to find someone to take him that would love him, he hadn't outgrown the "puppy" by 6 months. He was paper trained, no problem there....but he was driving us nuts! Not just the little puppy things that go with the territority.....not this guy! Even a trip to the vet to make a gentleman out of him, never slowed him down. He lived up to the name "rat and terror"...... We had never had a terrier before......had I known...for most of that first year I tried to give him away, (a pure bred, that I paid good money for, not that there is bad money), I wouldn't have thought of selling him, we loved him..... just finding him a good home was the main thing. I was almost to the point of offering money to anyone that would take him! Well he won out.... We would not take a farm for Spot today! Never had a dog like our Spot! And that is meant in the most positive way! I don't know what we would do with out our little Spot and I sure don't want to find out! And to think I would have given him up.....just a year ago.....There is nothing to compare with a dog's love!
Would I get another rat terrier, not in this life! Good luck and from experience patience and love will bring you more joy than you can even imagine. Indianajune

Just checked....forget the AKC...Just type in husky dog in your Yahoo or google, I did yahoo.......and you will come up with other owners/breeders and you should get some ideas even on training, all kinds of info. etc. Good luck to your daughter and her new friend. Indianajune
